BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – A single-vehicle crash took the life of 6-year-old Toni Cummings and severely injured a 5-year-old child on Wednesday night.
Neither child was restrained when the crash occurred around 7 p.m.
The fatal crash took place on I-10 east of Louisiana Highway 3246., according to the Louisiana State Police.
The vehicle involved in this accident was a 2002 Ford Explorer.
Anthony Luke, 35, was driving the Ford Explorer on I-10 “when a rear tire failed,” according to the Louisiana State Police.
The driver then lost control of the Ford Explorer after trying to overcorrect his steering.
The vehicle exited I-10 and proceeded to strike trees off of the roadway.
LSP says, the 6-year-old and 5-year-old ‘were ejected from the vehicle.”
Luke was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was taken to a local hospital with moderate injuries.
Toni Cummings would later die at the hospital from the injuries sustained in the accident.
Authorities do suspect that impairment played a part in this crash.
LSP says, “a toxicology sample was obtained and submitted for analysis.”
The investigation into this fatal crash remains ongoing.
