BATON ROUGE, La. (BRProud) – Thursday morning is a time that local commuters on I-12 West near Hammond would like to forget.
The Hammond Police Department received a call a little before 8 a.m. about a multi-vehicle accident.
The accident involved four vehicles and occurred at mile marker 41.
HPD says the driver of a large box truck involved in the accident stated that “there were vehicles getting onto the road from the shoulder, which caused him to slow down and everyone behind him slowed to a stop.”
At some point a black Audi rear-ended a Kia while changing lanes.
The Kia was then pushed “into a Toyota van and then into the box truck,” according to the Hammond Police Department.
This collision caused the Kia to catch fire with passengers still inside.
Some people at the scene were heroes and got the the Kia passengers out of the flaming vehicle.
The Hammond Fire Department put the fire out and provided emergency services until an ambulance arrived at the crash scene.
All in all, five people were sent to North Oaks Medical Center.
At the moment, only two people remain in the hospital.
HPD says, “those two remain in critical but stable condition.”
