PALM SPRINGS, CA (WCMH) — For 30 years, Jack Schreckengost has been helping students and parents safely cross the street at Vista Monte Elementary School.
Schreckengost decided to be a volunteer crossing guard at the school after retiring as a milk man.
“Meeting the people, meeting the children and when they come up some of them roll the window and say, Hi Jack!, and they wave, well that’s nice, I just like it,” Schreckengost tells KMIR.
Now the community is honoring Schreckengost for his dedication.
“Every year they talk to me and say, now remember you told us you were going to be here for your 100th birthday, we want to see, we will come see you,” said Schreckengost.
And if it’s up to Schreckengost, that’s exactly what he’ll do.
“I really don’t call this a job, I call this a position.”
