A hit-and-run suspect believed to be high on drug was arrested.
He’s accused of crashing into at least 14 vehicles from Madera to Fresno. The suspect has been identified as 50-year-old, Satinerjit Singh Bali of Lathrop.
“It was really alarming,” said Daisy Mejia who called 911. “I was really shook up about it.”
Just before 8:30 Wednesday morning, a driver on Highway 99 in Madera hit five cars, according to CHP.
When he reached Fresno, he exited Shaw Avenue, hitting even more cars, bringing the total to at least 14 vehicles, the CHP said.
“And the car right behind me kind of just peeled into the parking lot and a car was following him from close behind,” Mejia explained.
He finally came to a stop in a parking lot at El Capitan and Sierra Madera.
“Actually he was being followed by some of the victims that he had hit,” said Victor Taylor of the California Highway Patrol.
Mejia is the property manager of nearby offices.
“He started walking towards me and here in the parking lot and he stood next to me and he said, ‘I work here. I’m coming to work.'”
Mejia later confirmed that he used to work there.
“To me, he seemed really confused,” she said.
She says another car pulled in and the driver pushed him to the ground and they all starting wrestling.
“One of the gentlemen yelled at me and he said, ‘he almost killed me, he almost killed five people on the freeway,'” Mejia said.
She called 911.
“It was just a lot of commotion. A lot of chaos.”
“Some of the drivers exited their vehicle and actually held that individual down until law enforcement arrived,” Taylor said.
50-year-old, Satinerjit Singh Bali was arrested. He faces charges of hit-and-run and driving under the influence of drugs. Both are misdemeanors.
Fresno Sheriff’s officials say Bali will be released from jail sometime Wednesday evening.
