Oceans Behavioral Hospital Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Did you know that as recently as 2018, there were 50 suicides in East Baton Rouge Parish.

One behavioral health provider is tackling this head-on with a new behavioral health hospital in North Baton Rouge.

Oceans Behavioral Hospital Baton Rouge is one group that is represented in the New Era Medical Office Complex located at 7855 Howell Blvd.

Valerie Dalton, administrator of Oceans Behavioral Hospital Baton Rouge says that “access to behavioral healthcare is a challenge in communities across the country and, sadly, Baton Rouge is no exception. Even before the pandemic, there was more demand for mental healthcare services than supply allowed and the events of the past year have only intensified those needs.”

According to the latest Mental Health America Report, Louisiana ranks among the Top 20 states in the U.S. for the prevalence of mental health challenges, while at the same time ranking among the bottom half for access to care.

The North Baton Rouge Oceans Healthcare location is the third of its kind in the area.

The newest location has 40 beds and will provided mental health assistance to mature adults in these areas:

  • Managing post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Other forms of mental illness

Director of Nursing, James Bannister says, “Oceans Behavioral Hospital Baton Rouge is proud to be a part of the solution by improving access to care – especially for vulnerable populations. The opening of our new hospital is a huge step forward toward making mental health services more available in Baton Rouge. With two hospitals and an intensive outpatient program, we now have programs available to treat a wide variety of patients – including mature adults with anxiety and depression, as well as chronic mental illness, and seniors experiencing dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.”
