LOUISA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A Louisa County woman thought she would enjoy her Friday night with her windows open and her dogs by her side. Her night took a twist once a black bear made an appearance at the front door.

8News received footage of a black bear approaching a Louisa County home on Tuesday. The homeowner, who identified herself as Heidi M. from Louisa, said that the incident took place last Friday night when she was spending time in her living room with her dogs, Bear and Blue.

Video shows the bear wander around the front porch and even walk up the steps to the front door. The bear then moves to the end of the porch, away from the camera and towards a dog house, when the porch lights suddenly turn on.The bear jumps from the porch and begins to run away as two dogs come out of the home and chase it away. Heidi peeks outside as her dogs and the bear run out of view of the camera. She then realizes what’s happening and goes back inside the home.

When Heidi returns outside with a flashlight, her flat-haired retriever — coincidentally named Bear — has already come back to the front porch. After a few moments of flashing the light, Blue, a pit mix, runs back to Heidi.

Heidi can be seen in the video going back for her phone as she calls her dogs inside. Blue stays outside and sniffs around the front porch as Heidi speaks on the phone. She told 8News that as Blue came back to the porch, he saw a copperhead in the flower bed.Blue killed the snake but was bitten in the process and will now have a scar, Heidi said. She called Blue “quite the protector” and said he is “doing great.”

Heidi told 8News that she didn’t call authorities as there were no injuries to report and that “bears are somewhat common.” Heidi said her neighbors came by with a rifle after she called them.
