WHITE CASTLE, La. (BrProud) — The State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFM) has arrested an Addis man for setting a house boat on fire in the summer of 2019.

Donald Melancon, 39, has been charged with one count of Simple Arson. The White Castle Fire Department requested the help of the SFM in investigating a house boat fire on August 2, 2019. The fire occurred days before in the False Branch Canal located on Highway 69 to the south of White Castle.

According to the SFM, deputies found evidence that the camp next door, owned by the same owners of the house boat, had been broken into as well. After investigating the house boat scene, SFM investigators determined the fire was arson. Melancon was identified as a suspect and a warrant was obtained for his arrest.

The SFM says Melancon eluded deputies for several months until ultimately a warrant was issued for his arrest and he was taken into custody from home on July 10th.
