BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — An aspiring model from Baton Rouge is currently paralyzed from the waist down and hospitalized in Virginia after a crash that killed two of her friends after her 23rd birthday.

“Diamond is really spirited. Smiles all the time,” says Diamond Jonsie Grandmother, C. Denise Marcelle. Many know her grandmother, as a well-known State Representative covering District 61.

On September 8th, Diamond and a large group of friends decided to celebrate Diamond’s twenty-third birthday by traveling to New York, for Fashion Week in an RV.

Their vehicle collided into the back of a tractor-trailer on Interstate 66. The impact caused the RV to run off the interstate, through a guardrail, down an embankment and dropped 40 feet into several trees according to Virginia State Police.

According to Representative Marcelle, she says “It was tough getting the call because we actually thought Diamond was flying,” says Representative Marcelle.”Diamond didn’t tell us that she was getting an RV.”

State police say the driver of the RV, Ifreke Inyang, 25, of Houston, sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital.

Inyang was charged with reckless driving and driving without a valid operator’s license.

Two passengers, Lenisha Simon, 39, and Brenda Oyervides, 24, both of Houston, died at the scene. Four other passengers were taken to a hospital.

Diamond suffered from brain bleeding and is now currently paralyzed from the waist down.

Marcelle says that Diamond had two fractures in her spine and a fractured pelvis.

Currently, the family is trying to decide what is best for Diamond. The family has been traveling back and forth to Virginia from Baton Rouge since the accident. “One doctor would like her to fly back home, while another doctor says that she should be grounded,” Marcelle says.

Since the accident, the family continues to thank the Baton Rouge community for their support.
