THIBODAUX, La. (BRPROUD) – Deputies with the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday (August 16) joined a slew of Louisiana law enforcement personnel from various parishes for a day of training at Nicholls State University.
The training was all about Crisis Negotiation, which is used in high-tension situations to communicate with individuals who are threatening violence to themselves or others, barricaded in a building, or holding someone hostage.
The training aimed to teach local law enforcement how to tap into communication skills that can help to deescalate tense situations so as to bring them to a peaceful conclusion.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, “To enhance cooperation, crisis negotiators and tactical police officers should train together on a regular basis. Such training should focus on hostage taking, barricade situations, and suicide attempts and on the crisis negotiation process itself.”
The other agencies involved in the special day of training included Louisiana State Police, Nicholls State University Police Department, Thibodaux Police Department, and the Morgan City Police Department.
