Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office adds new boat to water division

News

The Assumption Parish Water Patrol Unit, which is responsible for handling law enforcement efforts on the waterways within the parish, will have a new tool at their disposal this summer. Boaters in the parish will see a new department watercraft on our waterways. The Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office has received one Waverunner personal watercraft as part of the Yamaha company’s Law Enforcement Loan Program.

The watercraft was obtained by the Sheriff’s Office through an agreement with Yamaha and the generous assistance of Leonard Maraist, owner of New Orleans and Lafayette Powersports.

The personal watercraft will allow officers to more closely patrol during events on our lakes and will allow them to get into shallow water areas if needed. Faster response times and a reduction in fuel costs are some of the major benefits. It can accommodate up to three people and reach speeds upwards of 65 miles per hour. Deputies will pay particular attention to boaters who operate their vessels under the influence of alcohol and minors who try to get away with drinking alcohol on local waterways. The Sheriff’s Office also has a number of boats that are used for patrolling, search and rescue, special events, and for particularly busy holiday weekends.
