NEW ORLEANS, La (BRPROUD) – The Orleans Parish Coroner identified 18-year-old Keyron Travis as the Baton Rouge teenager who was shot and killed in New Orleans over Thanksgiving weekend.

Travis was reportedly walking along Canal Street around 8 p.m. when he was approached by the suspect, who is also from Baton Rouge. Authorities say the suspect then shot Travis multiple times.

Travis was rushed to an area hospital where he died from his injuries.

The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) held a Monday, November 28 news conference to address Travis’s murder as one of several violent incidents that occurred over the weekend.

During the news conference, New Orleans Police Chief Shaun Ferguson explained that detectives are still working to determine a motive and a possible link between Travis and the suspect. He said, “We really don’t know their connection, we are trying to put that together. We just do not know if there is a relationship with them.”

Ferguson confirmed that both individuals were from Baton Rouge and went on to say, “So, we don’t know if that is something that stemmed from there (Baton Rouge) or (if they) happened to cross paths here. We really do not know what that was about, but we do know that we got the right individual.”

The alleged gunman is only 15-years-old and facing multiple charges, including second-degree murder. This suspect’s name cannot be released, as he is a minor.
