Baton Rouge Doctors urge patients to look after health, hospitalizations increase

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD)– There is new concern from capital area doctors as the number of daily Covid-related deaths and hospitalizations reach an alarming high.

The Louisiana Department of Health reported 105 deaths from complications of Covid-19 in one day across the state of Louisiana on Friday.

Medical experts warn that people who may be skipping regular check-ups could be putting themselves at risk.

“The state of Louisiana had more hospital admissions for all things, not just Covid, they set a record as a state this week,” Emergency Room Physician at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital Mark Laperouse said.

Medical experts say one possible reason patients are so sick is because they are skipping their routine appointments out of fear of contracting Covid-19.

“They are putting off subclinical heart disease and chronic conditions that should be taken of,” Oschner Vice President of Medical Affairs Ralph Dauterive said.

Laperouse says this month is already a hectic time of the year because of the cold and flu. The pandemic is adding an extra layer of complications.

“It’s a scary thing for someone that comes into the emergency department needing care, and they can’t get placed into a room,” Laperouse said.

Doctors are urging patients to listen to symptoms and stay on top of their health and symptoms before they escalate.
