BATON ROUGE, La, (BRPROUD) – The Baton Rouge Police Department was called to the scene of reported shooting on Wednesday, May 18.

Officers arrived at a location on St. Gerard Ave. around 12:10 a.m. and immediately noticed that EMS was trying to help a shooting victim.

The victim was shot in the chest and pronounced dead at the scene.

A witness said “he did not see the shooting, but advised that he saw Deangelo James Coleman holding a gun immediately after a single gunshot was fired,” according to the affidavit.

Coleman, 26, was at the scene and agreed to an interview with detectives.

The 26-year-old confessed to the accidental shooting.

“Coleman stated that he and the victim were playing around, and he pointed his gun at the victim and pulled the trigger,” according to the affidavit.

The 26-year-old did not believe there was a bullet in the chamber at the time of the shooting.

The gun was handed over to officers and Coleman was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Wednesday, May 18 and charged with one count of Negligent Homicide.

At this time, no bond has been set for Deangelo James Coleman.
