The Baton Rouge Metro High School Speech and Debate Team has made strides since its creation in the 2018 spring semester.

The program began with only four students on the team, and just two years later, that number has skyrocketed to 30, according to Donald H. Broussard Jr., the BRMHS teacher who coaches the team.

“While I coach them and guide them, these amazing kids are the engine that makes this program shine and thrive,” Broussard wrote. “We have several District and State Champions as well as young men and women ranked nationally in their [respective] events.”

Those events include Public Forum Debate, Lincoln-Douglas Debate and Original Oratory, according to Broussard.

The team climbed from the bottom of rankings to become the current No. 2 speech and debate team in Louisiana. Last year, the team ended its season as the No. 1 overall debate program in its district and in the state.

The team successfully conducted its first tournament, and Broussard said the team hopes to host another tournament on Feb. 14 and Feb. 15.
