Baton Rouge pharmacy sees a 200% uptick in COVID vaccinations

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD)- The Louisiana Department of Health reports over 47, 000 vaccine doses administered this week, which is a 58 percent increase from last week.

At Lagniappe Pharmacy, Covid vaccine appointments are up by 200 percent in just one week.

“I asked people personally why they chose to get vaccinated now, it’s because they knew someone who was infected with it now and wanted to get vaccinated,” Dr. Eric Peters, owner of Lagniappe Pharmacy said.

About three weeks ago the pharmacy was giving out around 12 doses a day. On Friday, staff at Lagniappe administered around 40 shots.

“A couple weeks ago doses were getting wasted, we were trying out best not to waste doses,” Peters said. “We would pick a store that would vaccinate that day and when people would come in we would say you can get vaccinated at this store to minimize wasting doses.”

On Friday, 16-year-old Jaylyn Jordan watched her grandpa get his first dose. Her grandpa motivated her to schedule her shot on Saturday.

Jordan said she wants to be able to feel safe when she returns to cheerleading during the upcoming school year.

“If you ever want the world to get back to normal, get the vaccine, you should get vaccinated,” she said.

BRProud also contacted two other local pharmacies, they said they were busy with covid vaccine appointments on Friday.
