BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — With bad things happening everywhere, one Baton Rouge resident wanted to create a safe place where people can come and enjoy their Sunday.

It all started with a passion for flowers. “Well, you know, I used to own Herbs Oasis, for like 35 years. And I love tropical plants, especially the tropical plants that come back every year. So I brought the oasis into my home,” said the owner of Charbel Ruth Harb’s Garden & Pond Home, Charbel Harb.

Charbel Harb said after retiring he has more time to enjoy his hobby – art.

Despite all that is happening around us, He wanted to create a space that represents Louisiana’s beauty, “People need to experience what we can do here in Louisiana, hot and muddy, doesn’t matter. Plants will live.”

Community members explained the garden is therapeutic.

“I love coming to their house because every time I come, the yard changes. He’s got more beautiful plants, and this time I think he’s outdone himself. Flowers should make everyone happy. It makes me smile, it’s a wonderful environment here,” stated Stella Beard, a visitor and family friend.

Harb explained that he also wanted to share his passion with other vendors who enjoy art, adding, “Plus, they give us an ambience.”

Most importantly, he wanted to give back to the community and to the Mighty Moms, which is an organization that focuses on ending child hunger in Livingston Parish.

Everyone that visited the garden Sunday donated to the nonprofit.

Harb said, “Last time we had the tour, we were able to feed 800 meals, 800 meals. And today I see that we’re doing pretty good.”

His aim is to tell people life is beautiful, and you can do anything with just a few tools in a small area.

Charbel Harb sells plant seeds every Saturday at the Oasis Market.
