BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – The number of arson cases in Baton Rouge are down in 2021 compared to years past.

The Baton Rouge Fire Department is providing statistics that show this to be true:

  • 2016 – 129
  • 2017 – 177
  • 2018 – 169
  • 2019 – 137
  • 2020 – 149
  • 2021 Through July 31 – 97

Investigations follow each arson and the Baton Rouge Department does a great job of solving these cases.

BRFD confirms that in 2021, their “clearance rate is 43% compared to a national clearance rate of 23.6%.”

The national clearance rate number comes from the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program.

As to why these fires are started on purpose, “fires are intentionally set for different reason. Some have been for personal disputes, some financial gain, and some for other reasons,” according to a spokesman for the Baton Rouge Fire Department.

The arson case numbers for July 2021 are forthcoming.
