BRFD extinguishes second overnight blaze at vacant building on St. Gerard Ave.

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – For the second time in six hours, the Baton Rouge Fire Department was called to a structure fire at the same location on St. Gerard Ave.

Firefighters extinguished a blaze at a vacant building around 12:20 a.m. on Thursday.

BRFD received another call about a reported fire around 6 a.m.

Firefighters arrived on scene to find the structure fully engulfed in flames and immediately went to work putting it out.

It took firefighters around two and a half hours to put the fire out.

“Fire investigators believe that this fire was caused by embers that were hidden in an interior wall from the earlier fire,” according to the Baton Rouge Fire Department.

The vacant building used to house the Battered Woman’s Program and lies directly across the street from Redemptorist St. Gerard School.

The building sustained around $400,000 in damages and is considered a total loss.
