BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — According to Baton Rouge Police, Southern University student, James Roberts Jr., was involved in a wreck on Friday, Sept. 23. James succumbed to his injuries in the hospital a few days later.

“I miss my baby,” said Gail Roberts, mother. “He was so full of life.”

Gail Roberts says her life is forever changed. The family describes the Southern University sophomore as a loving and caring soul. Dozens attended a balloon release on campus in his memory.

“He was a character at heart. He would get on our nerves; he was just a perfect gentleman. And when I lost his dad 15 years ago, he acted like the husband, he took care of me,” said Gail.

Baton Rouge Police report the crash happened at Nicholson Drive and Aster Street. Police say three vehicles were involved, one being James’ motorcycle. James reportedly hit the passenger side of a small SUV that was crossing over Nicholson. Right after the point of impact, the SUV veers into a third vehicle waiting at the stop sign on Aster Street. It’s unclear if the SUV stopped at the stop sign before approaching James.

“I’m torn, I’m loss for words,” said Gail.

Camera footage from a nearby business captured the incident. Police and family agree Roberts was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

“We were in the hospital from Friday to Monday, there were so many kids coming to see and support James,” said Justine Roberts, James’ sister.

“I knew that is who I wanted to be with forever,” said Judith Figueroa. “We spoke about getting married, having kids.”

Gail is still seeking closure, but Baton Rouge Police say they can’t reveal details when it’s an ongoing investigation.

“I just want justice for my baby because I don’t even know who hit him or how it happened,” she said.
