BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Three candidates have been vying for a seat in the Louisiana State Senate, and with the resignation of former Senator Rick Ward III, District 17 is up for grabs.

The three contenders, Caleb Kleinpeter, Jeremy LaCombe, and Kirk Rousset, aim to serve a district that stretches from Simmesport to Morgan City with borders on the East at Plaquemine and at Krotz Springs on the West. The large district also includes Greensburg, Clinton, and Jackson.

The winning candidate expected to face one final hurdle before becoming a member of the Louisiana State Legislature: election night. And that night has come to a conclusion .

As polls close Tuesday, November 8, Caleb Kleinpeter (REP) won the election with 50.98 percent of the votes.

Just behind him, Jeremy LaCombe (DEM) took 41.36 percent of the votes.

Kirk Rousset (REP) came in last with just over seven percent.
