Today, people came out to Redstone Arsenal to celebrate the army’s 244th birthday.

There was a birthday cake cutting, and lunch was served after. WWII veteran, Harold McMurran, was a guest speaker at the event. McMurran fought in D-Day, the Battle of the Bulge, and later served in Korea. He says he’s proud to be able to represent the U.S. Army today.

“If it hadn’t have been for the army when it was created we would not have had any type of a nation today that we do have,” said McMurran. The first active duty army officer to make a space flight as a NASA astronaut, Brigadier General Robert Stewart, was also there to celebrate.
