"We were in utter shock!!"

LUBBOCK, Texas (BRPROUD) – If Icky could talk, the chihuahua would have quite a story to tell. For now, one of its owners has a tale about a lucky stowaway.

Icky is an older chihuahua who came into the lives of Jared and Kristi Owens around five years ago.

So how did Icky become part of the family?

Jared Owens tells it this way, “My wife thought she hit a squirrel, jumped out, and there was this really dirty, starved Chihuahua that just jumped in her car when she opened the door. My 3-year old, Layla, at the time, said, “Mom, she’s so Icky!” That is how the name came about.”

Fast-forward a couple of years and the couple was on their way to Las Vegas from Lubbock in late September.

The day before the trip was to commence, Kristi Owens packed for the trip. Kristi left the bag open on their ottoman and Jared packed the morning of the flight.

Jared continues with this story, “This dog loves to burrow in everything, and sleeps about 20 hours of the day. The last thing I put in the suitcase was my boots, and she wasn’t in there. I zipped it up and we left. My mother-in-law was watching the kids and our animals at our house, so we didn’t double check all the animals, just gave our kisses to the kids and and took off to the airport.”

After arriving at the airport, the couple went to check in their bags before the flight.

At the Southwest counter, an employee named Cathy weighed their bag and it came in at 5.5 pounds overweight.

Cathy opened the bag and an unexpected surprise raised up out of a boot.

Icky was bopping her head and sticking her tongue out.

Jared surmises that Icky must have slipped off into the suitcase at some point that morning right before we left and burrowed under the clothes.

So with Jared and Kristi heading to Las Vegas, what happened to Icky?

Icky was handed off to a family member for safe keeping until the couple returned to Lubbock.
