East Baton Rouge Parish leaders organize “tailgate graduation” featuring Guest Speaker Coach O

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) From the flood of 2016 to a global pandemic the high school class of 2020 has seen tough times. Most senior festivities have been cancelled because of Covid-19. East Baton Rouge Parish leaders collaborated to host a commencement ceremony for groups of students from each parish high school.

Sheriff Sid Gautreaux, Mayor Sharon Weston Broome and LSU Head Coach Ed Orgeron each spoke at the ceremony.

Students were expecting Coach Orgeron at the ceremony but were told he was stuck in traffic and may not be able to make it. Shortly after, Orgeron arrived by helicopter. The National Championship Winning Coach offered seniors advice from the hardships he faced in his own life. He described the day he told his dad he would become a coach at Northwestern State University. Orgeron said he told his coaches at NSU he would become a coach, he didn’t need pay and he would sleep on a cot in the guest dressing room of the stadium if he could just have a chance to coach. “Everybody has a dream, everybody in here has a dream. I want to encourage you to chase your dream. God put that in your heart, he put it in your mind,” Orgeron said.

McKinley High Senior Lauryn Knight said she was disappointed in how many senior festivities were cancelled, but Tuesday night’s ceremony was one she would always remember.  “Today it showed us how the city of Baton Rouge loves us a lot and Rep. Fields and Mayor Broome and Coach O…They really showed support and that really meant a lot to me,” Knight said.
