Community cleans up abandoned Denham Springs cemetery

DENHAM SPRINGS, La (BRPROUD) Almost 100 volunteers helped clean up an abandoned cemetery Saturday in Denham Springs.

It started as a Boy Scouts project, but once the community found out about the project, they decided to pitch in to help.

The Felder Cemetery on Highway 16 had been abandoned for years. Overgrown grass and trees covered most of the graves.

“I’m just glad the community was able to come out and really come together and clean up the cemetery and hopefully clean it up for years to come,” said Boy Scout Cameron Cockerham.

“It was horrible,” said Boy Scout Steven Busby. “I hated seeing the graveyard like this.”

Organizers have created an organization to keep up with cemetery maintenance.

“No graveyard should ever look like this. I think we should come out and do thing more and get the community more active,” said Busby said.
