GRETNA, La. (WDSU) — Neighbors of a 97-year-old World War II veteran helped celebrate his birthday this week with a special drive-by surprise.
Robert Stanley was onboard a ship 75 years ago on his birthday when it was bombed twice in Japan. He was one of the few survivors and waded through shark-infested waters before he was rescued.
Stanley’s family members said he is beloved in his neighborhood and when his neighbors found out his family couldn’t make it to celebrate his birthday due to the coronavirus, they stepped up and showed out with a drive-by celebration.
