Contract teacher admits to smuggling cellphones, cigarettes and alcohol into prison

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – An investigation by the Dixon Correctional Institute has led to the arrest of Mark Shamburger, 61, of Ethel.

Shamburger was a contract teacher at the Dixon Correctional Institute.

The 61-year-old was arrested on Monday after admitting “to bringing contraband to DCI inmates including cellphones, cigarettes and alcohol.”

Shamburger is facing these charges:

  • Introduction of Contraband into a Penal Institution
  • Malfeasance in Office

At the time of the arrest, Shamburger was “a contracted teacher with the Louisiana Special School District, and working within DCI’s education department.”

Shamburger has been banned from Department of Corrections’ property.

The investigation remains ongoing.
