BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – The Baton Rouge Police Department was called to a reported shooting on Tuesday, April 5.

Officers arrived at a home on Wilmont Ave. around 8:30 p.m. and found “Devin Chaney, 32, laying in the roadway,” according to the affidavit.

Chaney had been shot multiple times and subsequently taken to a hospital.

The 32-year-old “told officers he was walking down the street, when an unknown subject shot him,” according to the affidavit.

Dispatchers with the Baton Rouge Police Department tell a different story.

The ensuing investigation uncovered multiple items at the shooting scene including a bloody tee shirt that belong to Chaney, shell casings and a gun.

Dispatchers say that three individuals told them that they were shot at while driving up to a home on Wilmont Ave.

All three of those individuals were interviewed by detectives.

The affidavit states that one of the vehicle occupants said “they turned into the driveway and saw Devin Chaney walking towards the vehicle.”

At some point, the trio claims that Chaney pointed a gun at their windshield and opened fire.

Two occupants inside the vehicle returned fire. A third person in the vehicle ducked in the back seat at the time of the shooting.

Cell phone security camera footage provided by the third occupant in the vehicle backs up what the trio told officers.

Further investigation determined that Chaney has been a convicted felon since 2016.

Chaney is facing these charges:

  • 3 counts of Attempted First Degree Murder
  • 1 count of Illegal Use of Weapons or Dangerous Instrumentalities
  • 1 count of Possession of Firearm or Carrying Concealed Weapon By A Person Convicted of Certain Felonies
  • 1 count of Aggravated Criminal Damage to Property

The 32-year-old was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Wednesday, April 13.
