BATON ROUGE, La. (LOCAL 33)(FOX 44) – The City-Parish opened another COVID-19 testing site, this time in North Baton Rouge.
The Our Lady of Lake North Campus will double as a coronavirus testing site finally closing the testing site gap between Zachary and Mid-City.
In a press conference Wednesday morning, Mayor Sharon Weston-Broome said the site’s location was intentional. Her goal was to bring testing access to a part of town that normally lacks medical facilities and give better availability to African American communities.
“In East Baton Rouge Parish, 65 percent of the people who have died from COVID-19 are African Americans,” Broome says.
Experts say the reason for the spike in African American coronavirus-related deaths is due largely to underlying conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes. But access to medical facilities and financial status also play a role. Broome says the new testing site gives people in North Baton Rouge a chance.
The site will operate like all the other testing sites do. It will stay open five days a week from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Patients won’t need to pay for their testing up front.
