BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – A drag racing “street takeover” turned into a police chase which ended with Kelvin Brown, 23, of Baton Rouge being taken into custody by the Baton Rouge Police Department.
Around 10:45 p.m. Friday, February 3, when officers responded to the 12600 block of South Choctaw Drive, according to a BRPD news release. Street car gang 2ActiveBR was reportedly blocking the major intersection of South Choctaw Drive and North Flannery Drive with stunts and drag races.
One officer in a BRPD helicopter saw a vehicle performing donuts in the intersection, according to the affidavit. Pedestrians and other vehicles were present. The helicopter followed the vehicle, a 2022 Dodge Charger, which left the area “at an extremely high rate of speed.” During the ensuing pursuit, the Charger reportedly topped 100 mph.
Another officer was in pursuit on the ground, and they followed the Charger on Greenwell Springs Road and Monterrey Drive. Brown allegedly ignored a traffic stop requests and drove through a red light. At some point, officers on the ground turned off their police lights and allowed the helicopter to continue following the vehicle.
The affidavit states that Brown drove against traffic, damaged a street sign when he ran off the road and ran more red lights and stop signs before stopping “at the intersection of Mount Pleasant – Zachary Road and Pecan Hill Drive.” That is where Brown was taken into custody. Police say he confessed to driving the Charger.
The responding officer also found an automated license plate cover attached to the vehicle.
After being taken into custody, the Baton Rouge man was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Saturday, February 4.
Brown was charged with:
- Aggravated flight from an officer
- Obstruction of justice
- Aggravated obstruction of a highway of commerce
- Criminal damage to property
- Hit and run
- Drag racing
Brown remains behind bars in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison, and no bond has been set as of Monday, February 6.
