BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Police say a store clerk at the Neighbors Food Mart on Dougherty Drive is accused of stabbing a former friend.

Officers with the Baton Rouge Police Department were called to a reported stabbing at this location around 7:20 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8. The suspect, identified as Arielle Mealey, 23, of Baton Rouge, was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Monday, April 10.

According to arrest documents, the stabbing victim said that she and her one-year-old child were checking out at the register when she got into a fight with Mealey over the way she handed her change back to her. Investigators learned that the fight escalated when Mealey was spit on by the victim.

During the fight, Mealey picked up a knife that had fallen out of her purse and allegedly stabbed the victim in the back. Injuries were reportedly non-life-threatening.

Mealey was charged with attempted second-degree murder. Her bond was set at $10,000.
