GONZALES, La. (BRPROUD) — A Gonzales police officer is on administrative leave after allegedly exchanging shots with a suspect Wednesday night.
According to the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, who is leading the investigation, the suspect shot himself before being shot by the police officer. The Gonzales Police Department said the officer was placed on administrative leave with pay and the sheriff’s office took control of the scene.
The suspect has been identified as Joseph White Jr.
The police said officers responded to LA Hwy 30 and I-10 after multiple 911 calls about a white Corvette’s reckless driving at 11:15 p.m.
One officer found the suspect’s vehicle overturned in the middle of Ashland Road, according to police. After walking toward the vehicle and making contact with the suspect, both allegedly fired shots at each other.
