BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A man who was found guilty in the death of a Zachary police officer/firefighter in 2018 was sentenced to 40 years in prison Friday.
Albert Franklin Jr. was found guilty of a manslaughter charge in the hit-and-run death of Christopher Lawton.
Lawton, 41, was killed in March 2018 after he was hit by a U-Haul truck at a Baker Walmart driven by Franklin while on duty. Lawton was trying to serve Franklin with a warrant. The coroner’s office said Lawton’s cause of death was due to blunt force injuries to the head and torso.
The Zachary Police Department said Lawton had served the community for over 20 years.
Today they sentenced the man that killed Deputy Chief Chris Lawton. He will receive 40 yrs with time served so he will have about 35 years left in this sentence. He still will be facing other charges so those will potentially tack on enough to keep him for life.Zachary Fire Department
