BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A Baton Rouge man was arrested, accused of drunk driving after a crash on Highland Road on Sunday, Feb. 26.
According to an affidavit, Michael Davila II, 31, was driving south on Jefferson Highway when he crossed the center line into the northbound lane. An oncoming vehicle tried to avoid a collision by swerving into a grassy area past the shoulder of the road. Louisiana State Police investigators said Davila swerved in the same direction as the other vehicle, causing a head-on collision.
Officials said three passengers of the second vehicle were moderately injured and taken to a local hospital.
According to investigators, during questioning, Davila’s speech was “severely slurred and almost incoherent” and he was unbalanced. After he was detained, he reportedly began to doze off and was unresponsive. Emergency services took Davila to the hospital because they believed he may have been in a possible overdose situation, an affidavit said.
Davila reportedly admitted to taking Xanax and drinking Crown Royal while driving.
He was charged with driving while intoxicated first offense, vehicular negligent injuring, driving left of center, open container, no seatbelt and license plate required.
