SORRENTO, La. (BRPROUD) — Pump #5 at the Marvin Braud Pumping Station is back online after a 3-month refurbishment.

The nearly 40-year-old pump was updated in preparation for hurricane season.

“Flood control is one of the most important functions of Parish Government,” said Ascension Parish President Clint Cointment. “We conduct regular maintenance on our equipment to be sure it will work when we need it to.”

After decades of usage, the pump needed to be fixed, according to the Parish of Ascension.

“We especially wanted the repairs completed and the pump back online as we prepare for hurricane season,” said Cointment.

The pumping station consists of 5 pumps built in the 1980s and two additional pumps that were added twenty years later.

The Parish of Ascension says, “each pump can handle approximately 450,000 gallons of water per
minute, so when all 7 pumps are running they can send 1,350,000 gallons through the station
every minute.”

The bayou basin covers most of East Ascension Parish.
