BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting from Sunday, Dec. 18 involving a juvenile.

According to EBRSO, deputies arrived at the 5200 block of Satinwood Drive. Deputies were informed of an argument between a tree cutter and a juvenile that escalated to shots being fired. Deputies reported that the juvenile, who was taken to a local hospital with multiple gunshot wounds, is expected to survive.

On surveillance footage from a nearby camera, detectives saw the victim walking down the street when Roderick Thomas, 42, grabbed a rifle from the driver’s side of his vehicle. Thomas then sat on a tree stump and waited for the juvenile to pass. The two reportedly exchanged words, and Thomas shot the rifle toward the victim and another unknown individual, who returned gunfire.

EBRSO said Thomas and the unidentified shooter entered their vehicles and fled the scene.

Thomas later contacted authorities and reportedly admitted to firing shots, saying it was in self-defense. Detectives contacted Thomas, and he refused to be interviewed, according to EBRSO.

Detectives are seeking an arrest warrant charging Thomas with attempted second-degree murder.
