After East Baton Rouge Parish Prison staff brought an inmate suffering from a suspected overdose to the hospital, medical staff gave the inmate a COVID-19 test as a precautionary measure. The test came back positive late Monday night.
The prison has since quarantined 94 inmates who stayed near the inmate with COVID-19, and inmates were granted additional free phone calls, according to East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office Public Information Director Casey Rayborn Hicks.
Those at the prison are supposed to practice the 6-feet social distancing recommendation, and prison staff began checking inmates’ temperatures twice each day, Hicks wrote.
The prison also provided inmates with additional hygiene products, and the prison waived all prescription and medical costs because of the pandemic.
