BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The East Baton Rouge School District holds its Back to School Bash to help students and parents prepare for this upcoming school year.
Mark your calendars, the first day of school in East Baton Rouge Parish is Monday, Aug. 8.
According to East Baton Rouge Parish School Board President, David Tatman, says he noticed how happy the kids are. “They seem excited to go meet their teachers and get started,” said Tatman.
In addition, Tatman spoke with several EBR teachers and staff as they are just as excited for the children. “Every teacher that I spoke to in there, is very excited about going back to work and getting back to some sense of normalcy,” he said.
The School District held their Back to School Bash, providing free supplies, with the help of sponsors and resources.
“We have thousands of supplies, backpacks, pencils, loose leaf paper, you name it,” said EBR Superintendent, Dr. Sito Narcisse. He couldn’t hold back his excitement seeing how well the community worked together to get prepared for the school year.
“The event kind of takes the stress off of the parents, you know, with getting uniforms and shoes,” said Raylish Randall, mother of a family that attended event.
However, while the EBR school district helps the students and parents of EBR, they are also looking for support.
According to Chief Human Resources Officer of EBR Schools, Nichola Hall, she says that the district has over 78 vaccines.
During the bash, Hall went up to several participants asking if they would like to be part of the school district, or was interested in having a career in education. The two main positions that Hall is looking to fill are teacher and bus driver positions.
With having these vaccines, Hall says it is challenging, but the exciting thing about a challenge is that there are lots of opportunities.
According to Hall, she says as long as you have a college degree, the district will help pay for teacher certifications to help bring in more faculty and staff.
Hall is really looking to fill these 78 positions by October. She mentions how teachers and other staff members are a family, and they are looking to have more of that aspect this year.
As for the Superintendent of the school, he’s looking forward to the kids filling those empty classroom seats. He says that they’re going to have 41,000 kids going into the school’s system, so it’ll be a lot of excitement.
