EBRSO: Authorities identify man who died in front of ExxonMobil

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – 43-year-old Darrel Thomas suffered a medical episode and died in the vicinity of Scenic Hwy. in front of the Exxon Mobile Refinery, according to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office.

An ExxonMobil extra-duty security detail responded to reports of a man lying down “in front of a plant entrance gate,” according to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office.

EMS was contacted and left the scene after paramedics concluded that Thomas was ok.

After paramedics left, the man ran into ongoing traffic.

At that point, the security detail handcuffed the man for his own safety.

Thomas was set to be taken to the hospital for evaluation but before that could be done, the 43-year-old man became unresponsive and died despite the best efforts of emergency personnel.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner is going to determine the cause of death in this case.

The ExxonMobil Baton Rouge Refinery is located at 4045 Scenic Hwy.
