Education advocates in Louisiana push for more funding toward child care assistance

Thousands of children from birth to 3 years old are on waiting lists to get into quality child care centers, and many families need financial help.

The average cost for those child care centers is around $175 a week per child, becoming one of the biggest budget burdens for families.

Education advocates are pushing for more funding for the early-childhood system, specifically towards the child care assistance program.

The commission is encouraging the state to invest $85.8 million to create a birth-to-3 program to launch this effort, with an increase of nearly that much each year over the next decade.
