Escaped Baton Rouge inmate surrenders after four-hour standoff

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office’s SWAT team apprehended an inmate who allegedly escaped from Our Lady of the Lake Hospital Sunday before having a nearly four-hour standoff with authorities.

Cecil Williams, 20, allegedly caused the standoff until 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the 2200 block of Pocahontas Street in Baton Rouge, according to EBRSO Public Information Director Casey Rayborn Hicks.

Police transported Williams to the hospital Thursday after he said he had trouble breathing. He was supposed to leave the hospital Sunday, but he escaped custody and fled around 3 a.m.

EBRSO SWAT surrounded the house around 10:30 a.m. and tried to get him to surrender for hours. Williams’ mother and former counselor urged him to surrender, but Williams wouldn’t budge, according to Hicks.

Williams didn’t leave the house until SWAT deployed CS gas into the house.

Police arrested Williams on Feb. 24 on armed robbery, attempted first degree murder and aggravated kidnapping, crimes he allegedly committed on Feb. 19.

Williams now faces an additional charge of escape, according to Hicks.
