Family calling for justice, following deputy-involved shooting

EAST FELICIANA PARISH, La. (LOCAL 33)(FOX 44)- The family of the man killed in a deputy-involved shooting is calling for formal charges against the suspect.

Christoper Whitfield was shot and killed a couple weeks ago, after East Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Deputy, Glenn Sims Senior responded to a robbery at a gas station in Ethel. Officials close to the case say, Whitfield, stole a raw chicken from the store before he was killed.

The East Feliciana Sheriff’s Office later revealed that the fatal gunshot was accidental.

In a press conference held Thursday, Ben Crump, a civil rights attorney, said the law enforcement system is taking too long to formally charge Sims with Whitfield’s murder.

“We want to hold this sheriff’s department accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” Crump said.

The East Feliciana District Attorney, Samuel D’Aquilla said that the full investigation results have to reach his office, before any discussion of charges can be had.

“We have the best interest of the family at heart,” D’Aquilla said. “When we get all the information necessary or in relation to this case, I’m going to sit down and go over it with them.”

D’Aquilla says it will take two to four weeks before the full investigation is complete.
