Family picking up the pieces after fire rips through their home

“No, no, no, it just got worse and worse.”

Shealynn August is talking about the flames that ripped through her home, Wednesday night.

“I never even would have thought that something like this would happen. Like nothing like this would happen, you don’t think something like this would happen to you.”

Fire investigators said, lightning struck the building causing a massive fire.

“When you see your whole life that you have been consumed by and to see that obliterated in front of your eyes, it’s devastating” said August.

She said, while trying to make a split second decision, one thing was on her mind

“Get the kids, get the cats, get out.”

August said she lost everything as the fire quickly spread throughout their home, but there is one blessing.

“My grandfather left a journal when he died, and he wrote a lot of encouraging things in there and it was untouched.”

She said, that one thing she salvaged is the reminder that through it all, there’s hope.

“God has never left us empty handed, he’s never gone to leave us empty handed. He always brought us through, and he brought us through better than before” said August.
