Update: Space heater caused apartment complex fire, firefighter said

The Baton Rouge Fire Department was called to a working fire at 1221 North Acadian Thwy.

The call came in a little before 4:45 a.m. and it took firefighters five minutes to arrive at the scene.

BRFD said, “firefighters arrived on scene to find fire coming from the second floor of the apartment building.”

At the time of the fire, there were 15 people in the building.

The apartments had working smoke alarms and everyone was able to escape the fire unharmed, according to the Baton Rouge Fire Department.

It took firefighters around 2 hours and 15 minutes to extinguish the fire.

The two-alarm fire was fought with the help of 14 total units, 9 pumpers, and 2 ladders.

The apartment sustained fire as well as smoke damage and the structure has been declared a total loss.

Investigators determined that the fire was caused by the “improper use of a space heater.”

BRPD, EMS, Entergy and the Red Cross assisted the Baton Rouge Fire Department at the scene of the fire.
