First babies of the New Year make their debut

BATON ROUGE, La. (LOCAL 33)(FOX 44)- When the New Year rolls around, everyone gets a shot at new beginnings. For two families in Baton Rouge, 2020 gave them the chance to be new parents.

Chasity Lathers gave birth to one of the first babies born in 2020, Jherzie. Lathers said she wasn’t expecting her bundle of joy to come so soon, especially not on the first day of the new decade.

“I was probably in labor all day and just didn’t know it,” Lathers said. “I was procrastinating on whether to come in or not.”

Lathers experienced several false alarms up until Jherzie’s debut. So when it was finally time to come into the hospital, Lathers was shocked her baby was one of the first to be born in the New Year.

Meanwhile across the tracks at baton rouge general hospital, another new year’s baby was making her debut as well. Rhonda Franklin, the baby’s aunt, said the birth was a beautiful surprise.

“I feel like she’s a blessing as quick as one leaves another one comes,” Franklin said.
Nylia Veal was born at 4:28 in the morning weighing 5 pounds and four ounces. Franklin said Veal’s birth was unexpected. Nylia’s mother went into labor during a party and the rest is history.

“It was no waiting, no any of that. She was ready to be evicted,” Franklin said.

Both of the baby girls are healthy and doing well, bringing in something sweet with the New Year.
