First Responder: Paramedic of the year, Keith Green

News

BATON ROUGE, La. (NBC Local 33) (FOX 44) — First responders put their lives on the line everyday, just to do their jobs.

Keith Green was named ‘Paramedic of the Year’ for 2019, as a member of East Baton Rouge EMS.

Green said the honor came as a surprise. “I was genuinely surprised by that,” said Green. “That made me feel good.”

Green has been with the department for 12 years, but has more than two decades experience helping others.

Green said he never saw himself becoming a first responder, but an unexpected incident changed the course of his life.

Green’s brother died when Green was 23 years old. “He was spraying a dried up catfish pond one day and his plane crashed and it killed him,” said Green.

“He sat in the airplane, alive, for an hour,” said Green. The moment he found that out was the moment he decided he wanted to learn more about why his brother was not attended to in a more timely manner. Green said that is the moment the course of his life changed forever.
