Girls on the Run South Louisiana will celebrate operating for 10 years and serving 10,000 girls with the bi-annual Girls on the Run 5k on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center.
Girls on the Run is a nonprofit, after-school program with the goal of helping girls develop skills to navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness.
The 5k signals the conclusion of the 10-week program for 450 girls across Acadiana, Greater Baton Rouge and the Northshore and is supposed to provide the girls with a sense of value and goal setting at a young age.
The program culminates with girls impacting their communities through a service project and being prepared to complete the 5k.
People of all ages can participate in the 3.1 mile event, which is not timed. There will be music and free activities for children at 1 p.m., followed by a pre-5k warm up and food after the 5k.
Registration costs $30 for the public, $10 for GOTR alumnae and is free for children age 7 and under. Payments are due by Thursday, Nov. 14., and registration after that date will cost $35.
