OMV closed until Monday, Gov. Edwards says

BATON ROUGE, La. (LOCAL 33)(FOX 44)- In a press conference Thursday, Governor John Bel Edwards said the Office of Motor Vehicle locations will reopen on Monday, following a ransomware attack.

Governor Edwards said the cyberattack was unsuccessful at altering or stealing any files. He said the process to reimage the computer system is nearing its final stages. The computers should be completely restored next week.

The OMV computer system went down Nov. 18 after someone downloaded an unauthorized software, resulting in a ransomware virus spreading to almost 10 percent of state agency computer systems. A ransomware virus keeps digital files hostage until the hacker is paid a ransom.

Officials say almost all computer systems are back up and running.
