Gov. Edwards to meet with advocates to discuss gender pay gap

News

As the gender pay gap continues, a discussion will be held to hopefully level the workforce playing field.

Governor John Bel Edwards will meet with equal pay advocates and legislators to discuss Louisiana’s nation-worst gender pay gap and the ongoing fight to close that gap.

Edwards is the only candidate for governor that supports efforts to close the gender pay gap. according to surveys, 90 percent of Louisianans believe men and women should be paid the same wage for the same work.

Louisiana has the worst gender pay gap in America, with women earning only 69 cents for every dollar a man makes.

There have been several attempts to close that gap. Representative Barbara Norton (D-Shreveport) presented House Bill 289, but stalled in the House Labor Committee by a vote of 6-9 back in May.

That discussion will take place Monday at LSU Women’s Center beginning at 9:30 a.m.
