Hammond Square shopping center shut down due to active investigation; 1 in custody

HAMMOND, La. (WDSU) — All of Hammond Square in Hammond is shut down due to an active police investigation.

WDSU reporter Travers Mackel said a helicopter is flying over and police remain on the ground at the shopping center at Interstate 12 and SW Railroad Avenue.

The incident was reported around noon Friday.

Officials confirm that there was a potential gun-involved situation.

A spokesperson for the city of Hammond said in an update Friday that one person is in custody and no injuries have been reported.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office is also on the scene.

The law enforcement officers are currently searching the parking lot.

Officials have also put in place road closures as the investigation continues. Motorists should avoid the area until further notice.
