Heart healthy cooking with the American Heart Association

February is heart month and the American Heart Association is stressing the importance of cooking well-balanced, heart healthy meals.

In January 2020, the Capital Area American Heart Association launched their Simple Cooking with Heart Mobile Kitchen as a part of a larger strategy to address clinical and community issues of access, affordability, autonomy and awareness of food security in five area zip codes of Baton Rouge with a focus on those that are without transportation, seniors or low-income/low access. This is done in partnership with Mayor-President Broome’s Healthy BR Geaux Get Healthy initiative where they work with several partners to increase community access to healthy and affordable foods.

Along with Chef Traci Vincent, the AHA is now offering free cooking demonstrations at a community farm in Howell Park and various stops with the mobile markets as well as implementing healthy corner store initiatives. You can find the Simple Cooking with Heart mobile kitchen near you at least five times each month as the Geaux Get Healthy initiative ensures that we are reaching residents throughout the city to bring healthier food options to more Baton Rouge neighborhoods.
